It made me think about what struck me the most and what has left a lasting impression. It was The Song of the World. Maybe because it was more contemporary and relatable? I’m a designer and a painter, so I can appreciate tapestry both as an artist and as a craftsperson. I would have lived to take an in depth trip like this! I’ve only finished one small tapestry—as an art student at the University of Michigan—which only increased my appreciation of the art form. Art for art's sake is the reality for most artists in the states. There are a few supporters who pay on a commission basis, but they are becoming fewer as the internet offers plenty of choices based on price. Ah well!!! I will always love the hand being involved so thank you for sharing your experience!!! My references to cropping were about eliminating distracting backgrounds and pulling out details, but that was not clear in my post. Great description too about why detail shots are important. They're specific to quilts, but probably applicable to other mediums as well.

I don't think that the quality of the photograph is quite as important as you have said. Yes, it's lovely to get professional photography -- who knows, maybe somebody will want to put your work in a book -- but I don't think it's necessary to be juried into a show.

I think it's kind of bush league to photograph your quilt being held up by two people in front of your garage door, but as long as I can see the entire quilt I am capable of looking at that part of the image without being distracted by the garage door. Or at least if I'm a decent juror I should be. Any show juried by somebody who's so supercilious as to announce that she plans to disqualify anybody with visible garage door -- and I have read exactly this sentiment in the catalogs of more than one major quilt show -- is one that maybe I don't want to enter.

I will suggest that if you have to photograph in front of the garage door, at least crop out as much of the garage door as possible before you send in the photo.

I will also suggest that you make sure to show the edges of your quilt rather than make it nice and square by cropping. How your edges look makes a big difference in how your quilt comes across. I'm NOT saying that absolutely straight edges are necessary, but irregular edges give a different vibe, and as a juror I want to know whether the edges have the same vibe as the rest of the quilt.

And finally, I suggest that you zoom in A LOT for your detail shot. I want to see things in the detail that were not apparent in the full view. Show me something that will interest me, that will intrigue me, that will tell me something impressive about your technique, that will make me want to see it in person.

kathy loomisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810530569984483994.post-15340615537614693342023-04-12T15:45:52.880-06:002023-04-12T15:45:52.880-06:00My favorite thing to weave is R&D.
